Rugby: First 1st XV Rankings For 2014

These are still the very early stages of the season and many of the teams are yet to fire of all cylinders but there has still been a substantial amount of rugby that has been played so the first rankings of year could indicate the current form of the teams.

School Rugby Rankings April 2014It is no surprise to see Grey College way out in front and the early signs do indicate that Grey have a formidable side this year after experiencing an average season in 2013 by their high standards. They have yet to take on some of the stronger teams, with their outing against Menlopark perhaps their toughest opposition to date. However they have taken care of business with clinical precision and it is going to take a massive performance by the teams they play to stop the Bloemfontein juggernaut.

Grey High School also enjoyed a very successful start to their 2014 campaign with four straight wins in their own festival. The likes of Kearsney College, Nico Malan, Marlow and Michaelhouse all came unstuck against them and many are tipping Grey PE to be amongst the front runners during the year.

Bear in mind that we have limited the minimum amount of matches to three before a team can be included in the rankings so expect some fairly noticeable movement on the table as more teams are added as they play more matches. The likes of EG Jansen have a terrific side this year and it will not surprise to see them entering in the top five and of course there is still Affies to include.

As expected many will contest the rankings as is sometimes the case as nobody wants to see their team struggling but the rankings tend to even itself out the more matches that are played and do give a fair reflection of the form on display.

How the Rankings are worked out?

In essence this is roughly the method that is used:

There are several factors that are critical for the equation to work and to ultimately rank the teams. The SA School Sports Rankings system makes us of a “seeding” structure whereby each team is seeded according to their strength. This ensures that a team’s victory against a weaker team is ‘graded’ and not accorded the same value as a victory against a similar or stronger team. In addition it also allows a lower seeded team to accumulate more bonus points if they were to beat a higher seeded team.

Bonus points are allocated for the result (Win or draw). These Result Bonus Points take into account the strength of the opposition which helps to ensure that a team who primarily plays and beats weaker opposition does not find itself higher up the rankings than teams who are playing stronger opposition.

Additional bonus points are accorded for the actual points scored in the match and the margin of victory.

All the various bonus points are then totalled and an average is worked out which ultimately ranks the teams.
